When I found a teacher for a few years, he asked what was my goal or what I hoped to learn.
I told him I wanted to be able to play well with others so he geared the lesson with that in mind.
Mostly we used an assortment of sound tracks, so I could listen to the changes and know where I was in a song.
Then the next step was to play with people which has been a lot of fun.
Not everybody learns that way but it is one way to go about it

Just tell her you are not wrong, you are just being creative! Second thoughts, you better not tell her that.

That reminds me of the Morecome and Wise Clip On The Telly, where Eric is playing the wrong notes in front of Andre Previn.on the piano.
Eric says,”I am playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right Order”
Eric.

I sometimes take the advice if i play the wrong notes do it two more times and folks will think it is part of the song.

To find other people to play with we started making the rounds to various "open mikes".
Usually you get to play anywhere from 2 songs or so depending on who is hosting the evening.
Ideally others start to ask you to join them on their songs which is nice and keeps you on your toes.
The hope is to get hired for their regular gigs.
plus
Having fun and meeting new friends is always a big plus...and a good time was had by all...
